Why Your Back Hurts (And What to Do About It)

Low back pain isn’t always about a slipped disc or a pinched nerve. For most people, the real cause is mechanical — poor movement patterns, weak glutes, tight hips, and sitting too much. At Oakton Strength Systems, we don’t throw generic stretches at the problem. We address the root cause.

1. Weak Glutes and Core Instability

If your glutes don’t fire properly, your lower back picks up the slack. This leads to overuse and strain, especially when walking, running, or lifting. Add in a weak core, and your lumbar spine is left without proper support.

What We Do at OSS:
Our coaching focuses on proper glute activation (bridges, RDLs, split squats) and core stability work (bird dogs, dead bugs, planks). Every session reinforces movement integrity.

2. Tight Hip Flexors and Limited Mobility

Sitting all day keeps your hip flexors shortened and your pelvis out of position. That anterior tilt creates compression in your low back.

What We Do at OSS:
We incorporate active stretching, 90/90 drills, hip CARs, and strength work to restore hip function. Our workouts are built to move your body the way it was designed to move.

3. Poor Lifting Mechanics

Deadlifting with a rounded spine or squatting without proper bracing? It adds up. Bad movement under load is a fast track to pain.

What We Do at OSS:
Every new client learns proper hinge, squat, and brace mechanics through our OnRamp program. You won’t just be told to “keep your chest up”—we teach you why, how, and what muscles should be firing.

4. Lack of Consistent Strength Work

One-off workouts don’t build resilience. Your spine needs strong glutes, stable lats, and coordinated movement through the entire posterior chain. That takes consistent, progressive training.

What We Do at OSS:
Whether you’re in our personal training or group classes, your plan builds strength and control. Our programming balances push/pull, upper/lower, and integrates mobility to keep you pain-free and functional.
